AFROPUNK: Hunter’s EDGE celebrates individuality at the AFROPUNK BATTLE OF THE BANDS event 2017
Global movement, AFROPUNK announced their first ever South African Concert held at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg on December 30-31. As a lead up to this exciting event, AFROPUNK teamed up with Hunter’s EDGE, the innovative hybrid beverage that challenges the status quo of any drinking occasion, to host the AFROPUNK Battle Of The Bands competition.
The AFROPUNK Battle Of The Bands competition is a platform that gives undiscovered talent an opportunity to share a stage with global musical acts, performing at the main AFROPUNK event. It’s also about celebrating their individual identities and their ability to introduce a sound that is reinventing the musical landscape. Similar to the artists, EDGE is a new player that has changed the status quo by introducing a new hybrid beverage and celebrating the spirit of reinvention.
The 4-week series of events saw a diverse group of people from all races, genders, colours, creeds and tastes gathering to celebrate their individuality and nonconformity while enjoying refreshing performances by upcoming local artists.
To amplify the reinventive message and AFROPUNK’S BATTLE OF THE BANDS competition, EDGE launched a call to action on social media platforms inviting their fans to showcase how they are challenging the status quo. Using the hashtags #IAM and #REINVENTINGTHEGAME, fans shared their images and stories of reinvention and celebration of individuality. The call to action was well received by fans, with many telling their stories of reinvention through fashion, art, food and music.
EDGE amplified the AFROPUNK BATTLE OF THE BANDS competition by carrying the reinvention flag and catching up with some of the most stylish and stand-out individuals which include content creator, Jeri Mokgofe, editor of The Plug Magazine, Caron Williams.
In a surprising twist and a break from the norm of having one winning band, the judges at the final event held in Tembisa, announced Automatic Live and Stiff Pap as the competition winners to perform at the main AFROPUNK event. Both bands were selected as winners for their refreshing performances and re-inventive style.
